"A Child Called It" by Dave Pelzer is quite an emotional autobiography. The author reflects upon his tragic childhood being physically and mentally abused on a constant basis. The book is written in the perspective of Dave as a child who was left very confused after the first four years of life had seemed to be significantly different from the rest of his childhood, in which these first four years consisted of a "normal" life where he was treated with love and compassion by his mother. Dave had become deprived of this and his life had certainly taken a turn for the worse. When his mother became an alcoholic, she had become relentless and mistreated Dave in horrifying ways. Since he was so young, he was left dumb-founded as to why his mother's behavior had become erratic. What made this book extraordinary was how Dave perceived everything as a child, who experienced so much fear and suffering from starvation on numerous occasions. As compelling as this novel was, it not only has you at the edge of your seat, but it also provides valuable lessons. Some of them would include that you should be grateful and appreciative of the life you have because it could be a lot worse, and that with courage and perseverance we can get through anything.
