I wanted to hate Tomas. This book was troubling. No one wants to be a Tereza, as much as the book presents the idea that a man can love a woman but cannot limit himself to being with that woman, which has nothing to do with love. A familiar theme. Nature is a very scary thing for Terezas and a great thing for Tomases. Must be nice to be a Tomas. It seems incredibly unfair that he gets to own Tereza completely but is not owned by her. But that's just the characters -- the author certainly doesn't judge them for you. This novel is an interesting one.
